Space-Water-Environment Nexus (SWEN) E-Centre
About SWEN
The Space–Water–Environment Nexus E‑Centre for Research and Education (SWEN) is built on the idea that space, water, and the environment are deeply interconnected. From water mining on other planets to understanding how comets and asteroids may have delivered water to Earth, space science is central to solving water and climate challenges.
Satellites such as GRACE and PACE monitor Earth’s water cycle, aerosols, ocean health, and climate change, while space missions also undergo environmental impact assessments. SWEN brings these technologies together to serve Africa’s sustainable future.
Our Mission
SWEN is dedicated to advancing space science, space technology, water research, and environmental sustainability to improve the social, economic, and environmental well‑being of communities across Africa.
We achieve this by:
-
Educating and inspiring young people
-
Supporting research and innovation
-
Building capacity across communities
-
Connecting science to real‑world environmental challenges
Our Vision
A future where African communities use space technologies and environmental science to protect water resources, fight climate change, and build sustainable societies.
