Space-Water-Environment Nexus (SWEN) E-Centre
About SWEN
The Space–Water–Environment Nexus E‑Centre for Research and Education (SWEN) is built on the idea that space, water, and the environment are deeply interconnected. From water mining on other planets to understanding how comets and asteroids may have delivered water to Earth, space science is central to solving water and climate challenges.
Satellites such as GRACE and PACE monitor Earth’s water cycle, aerosols, ocean health, and climate change, while space missions also undergo environmental impact assessments. SWEN brings these technologies together to serve Africa’s sustainable future.
Our Mission
SWEN is dedicated to advancing space science, space technology, water research, and environmental sustainability to improve the social, economic, and environmental well‑being of communities across Africa.
We achieve this by:
Educating and inspiring young people
Supporting research and innovation
Building capacity across communities
Connecting science to real‑world environmental challenges
Our Vision
A future where African communities use space technologies and environmental science to protect water resources, fight climate change, and build sustainable societies.
What We Do
1. Education & Academic Outreach
Inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators
Space‑to‑School Toolkits – Downloadable materials showing how satellites track African water systems
University Ambassador Program – Student‑led Nexus Chapters hosting seminars and data projects
Astro‑Classroom Live – Monthly webinars with African space and environment experts
STEM Curriculum Integration – Lessons on Earth Observation and climate resilience
2. Research & Citizen Science
Turning communities into researchers
Crowdsourced Water Mapping – Citizens log water quality and availability via mobile tools
Open‑Access Data Hub – Satellite and ground‑based environmental datasets
Frugal Innovation Lab – Low‑cost water sensors and weather stations built locally
3. Society & Analogue Astronauts
Using space science to solve Earth’s challenges
Analogue Habitat Simulations – Mars‑like living to test water recycling and survival systems
Policy Hackathons – Using SWEN data to help leaders draft environmental laws
The Nexus Voice Forum – Traditional ecological knowledge meets modern space science
4. The Fun Zone
Learning through excitement and creativity

Mars‑Colony Challenges – Design water‑efficient space habitats
VR Tours – Explore the Solar System and African ecosystems in virtual reality
Governance: The SWEN Board
Board Purpose
The Board provides governance, sustainability, and protection for SWEN. It ensures the centre aligns with the PACS e-Lab mission, secures funding, and safeguards intellectual property and research data.
Key Roles
Chairperson – Strategic leadership and representation
Technical Lead – Oversees scientific and technological direction
Outreach Lead – Manages education, partnerships, and public engagement
Treasurer – Financial management and accountability
Who Can Join?
SWEN welcomes people from space science, water science, environmental studies, engineering, technology, and all other disciplines. We believe science is for everyone and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration.
